Dallara SP1 - 2004

Dallara SP1

Established in 1972 by engineer Giampaolo Dallara in Varano de' Melegari (in the Italian province of Parma), Dallara is renowned as a manufacturer of chassis, and also of complete cars. Towards the end of the 1990s, the company began developing a car under its own brand name, the LMP 900, which was intended to compete in the premier class of endurance racing as of 2001.

Chrysler then ‘intercepted’ the project, commissioning Dallara to complete the car, which was then renamed the Chrysler LMP and fitted with a 6-litre Mopar engine. With the support of the French team Oreca, the American brand entered three cars in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2001, to replace the Reynard cars that had been used the previous year. One of these cars, driven by Olivier Beretta, Pedro Lamy and Karl Wendlinger, finished fourth behind the unbeatable Audi and Bentley cars.

After Chrysler pulled out, Dallara relaunched its car under the name Dallara SP1, which caught the attention of a few private teams, including the American team Doran, who fitted the car with a 4-litre Judd V10 engine and decided to race it in November of that year at the 3 Hours of Daytona. However, the car did not finish the race and ended up in twenty-sixth place.

The next year brought some early wins at the 24 Hours of Daytona, the Miami Grand Prix, the California 400 Miles and the 6 Hours of Mont-Tremblant, while a second car, acquired by the Oreca team, won the FIA Championship for Sports Cars at the Estoril circuit in April.

The Oreca team entered two more cars sponsored by Playstation at the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2002, taking fifth and sixth place behind the usual Audi and Bentley cars.

The only Dallara SP1 user in 2003 was the Doran Team, which claimed fourth place in the Sonoma (California) race as part of the American Le Mans Series. In 2004, two SP1 cars returned to the track carrying the livery of the British Rollcentre Racing Team, while a third was entered by Italian team Spinnaker. One of the British cars competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans with the Portuguese driver João Barbosa and the English drivers Rob Barff and Martin Short at the wheel. The car performed well during qualifying, securing ninth place on the starting grid with a time of just under 3' 40''. In the second half of the race, it managed to climb up the leaderboard by overtaking the Audi R8 driven by Emanuele Pirro, who had suffered an unexpectedly long pit stop. But then Martin Short was involved in two collisions: the first damaged the car and the second put it out of the race. He dropped back to fourth place after accidental contact with Sébastien Bourdais' Pescarolo, before running off the track as a result of a broken rear left suspension, giving up after 230 laps.

The Dallara SP1 Rollcentre Racing Team competed throughout the 2005 season, securing three impressive third-place finishes at the 1000 km races in Spa, Monza and Silverstone.
